Hydro Jetting and Cast Iron Descaling
High-pressure water and mechanical cutters take a line back to bare pipe wall — both as a repair in its own right and as the step that decides whether a liner holds.
Jetting versus snaking
A drain snake or cable auger bores a hole through a blockage. Flow returns, the call is closed, and the blockage material is largely still on the pipe wall — which is why the problem comes back on a schedule you could set a calendar by.
Hydro jetting cleans the pipe rather than punching through it. A hose with a specialized nozzle is fed into the line; forward jets cut into the obstruction while rear-facing jets propel the hose and scour the wall as it travels. Grease is emulsified and flushed. Root mass is cut and washed out. Sediment goes downstream to the main instead of settling back into the low spots. The line is left at its actual diameter, not at the diameter of the hole a cable made.
Descaling cast iron
Cast iron does not clog the way clay does. It corrodes inward, forming tuberculation — hard, layered nodules of corrosion product that build up until an original 4-inch drain has a couple of usable inches left and a surface texture that catches everything passing over it.
Water alone will not remove that. Descaling uses mechanical tooling — chain knockers and cutting heads spun at speed inside the pipe — to break tuberculation off the wall, followed by jetting to flush the debris. Done properly, the camera afterward shows bare metal instead of a rough orange interior, and the line's real diameter comes back.
This is standard work in Southern California's postwar tract housing, where cast iron building drains from the 1950s and 60s are reaching the end of their functional lives across entire neighborhoods at once — Torrance, Lakewood, Fountain Valley, Westminster.
Why this step decides whether a liner holds
A CIPP liner bonds to the host pipe wall. A spin cast coating builds on the host pipe wall. In both cases, whatever is on that wall when the material goes in becomes part of the assembly. Line over root mass and you have bonded a structural liner to root mass. Line over loose scale and the liner is attached to something that was already coming off.
So on every lining job the sequence is: camera, clean and descale, camera again, then line. That second camera pass matters — cleaning routinely exposes defects that debris was hiding, and occasionally what it exposes changes the recommendation entirely. Better to discover a belly at that point than after a liner has cured inside it.
When jetting is the wrong move
Jetting pressure inside a pipe that is already compromised can open what it is cleaning. If the camera shows thin, cracked or badly deteriorated wall, aggressive jetting is a genuine risk, and a contractor who jets first and looks second may hand you a bigger problem than the one you called about. We camera first, then choose pressure and tooling for the condition of the pipe in front of us — which sometimes means a gentler approach, and sometimes means the line needs repair rather than cleaning.
Standalone jetting service
Not every jetting job leads to a repair. Plenty of lines are structurally fine and simply need periodic cleaning:
- Restaurant and commercial kitchen lines. Grease accumulation is a maintenance reality, not a defect. Scheduled jetting is far cheaper than an emergency during service hours.
- Properties with heavy tree canopy where roots return between repairs, or where a full repair is planned for a later budget cycle.
- Apartment and commercial buildings on preventive maintenance intervals.
- Older homes where an annual or biennial clearing keeps a serviceable line serviceable.
If we clean a line and the camera shows it is in good condition, we will tell you that and not manufacture a repair. That is worth saying plainly, because in this trade it is not universal.
