Sectional Point Repair — Fix the Defect, Not the Whole Line
When the camera shows one defect in an otherwise sound line, there's no reason to line the whole run — and no reason to pay for it.
How a sectional repair works
A short liner sleeve — typically two to four feet, sized to overlap the defect generously on both sides — is saturated with resin and wrapped around a packer, a purpose-built inflatable bladder. The packer is positioned in the line using the camera and the footage counter so the sleeve sits precisely over the defect. It is then inflated, pressing the sleeve against the pipe wall while the resin cures. The packer is deflated and withdrawn, leaving a cured sleeve bonded in place.
The rest of the line is untouched. Nothing is excavated. The whole procedure typically takes two to four hours including the camera work.
When a sectional repair is the right call
It comes down to what the camera shows along the full length of the run:
- One isolated defect — a single crack, one offset joint, one root entry point — in a line that is otherwise sound end to end
- A newer line with a specific failure, where the rest of the pipe has decades of service left
- A defect at a known, locatable position that the packer can reach and seat against properly
- Sound pipe wall on both sides of the defect for the sleeve to bond to
When it isn't
Here is where we will talk you out of it, because the arithmetic is not in your favor:
- Defects scattered along the run. Three or four sectional repairs cost more than one full-length liner, and every joint you didn't treat is still a future root entry point. At that point full-length lining is both cheaper and better.
- Old clay with a systemic problem. If the line is seventy-year-old vitrified clay and roots have found one joint, they will find the next one. The defect you can see is a symptom of the condition of the whole run.
- Anything grade-related. A sleeve cannot change where the pipe sits, any more than a full liner can.
Sectional repair is a genuinely good tool used in the right situation and a false economy used in the wrong one. The camera footage tells us which this is, and we'd rather have that conversation before the work than after.
A common good case
A newer home — say a 1990s PVC lateral in Murrieta or Temecula — with recurring backups. The camera shows thirty-plus feet of clean, sound pipe and one joint that has pulled apart where the ground settled, with roots taking advantage of the opening. Nothing else on the run is failing. Lining the entire lateral would work, but it would be spending money on thirty feet of pipe that has no problem. A sleeve over that one joint solves the actual issue.
A common bad case
A 1955 clay lateral in Garden Grove where the camera shows root intrusion at one joint — and, on closer viewing, hairline cracking at three others, plus general wall wear along the run. A sectional repair on the worst joint would clear the current backup and buy perhaps a couple of years. The line's condition would not have changed. This is a full-liner job, and saying so costs us a cheaper sale and earns us a customer who doesn't call back angry.
What you get
Camera footage before, showing the defect and its measured position. Camera footage after, showing the cured sleeve seated over it with clean transitions at both ends. The cured sleeve is the same class of material as a full-length liner: corrosion-resistant, structurally sound, and rated for long service. It simply covers two feet instead of eighty.
