Conventional Sewer Line Replacement, When It's the Right Call
We quote trenchless first. But some lines cannot be saved by any method that works from the inside, and pretending otherwise is how repairs fail twice.
Why a trenchless company has a page about digging
Because the alternative is selling liners into situations where they will not work. A liner cures to the shape of the pipe around it. If that shape is wrong — if the line has settled, sagged, collapsed, or was never laid at proper fall — then a liner produces a smooth, jointless, corrosion-proof version of a pipe that still does not drain.
When the camera shows one of those conditions, replacement is the honest recommendation and we make it. That costs us the easier sale. It also means the repair works.
When replacement is necessary
- Lost grade or back-pitch. A section that no longer falls toward the main has to be re-laid at proper slope. No lining method changes where a pipe sits in the ground.
- Bellies holding standing water. Same reasoning. The sag is in the ground, not in the pipe wall.
- Total collapse over a length. Beyond what bursting can pull through cleanly.
- A route that has to change. New structure over the old path, a connection point that has moved, or a line that was always in the wrong place.
- Bursting ruled out by proximity. Where soil displacement would transmit to a foundation or to closely spaced gas and water lines, the trenchless replacement option is off the table too.
How we do it
The difference between a good conventional replacement and a bad one is mostly invisible once the ground is closed, which is exactly why it matters who does it.
- Locate and mark. USA North 811 notification, plus our own camera and locator work to confirm depth and route before anything opens.
- Excavation with shoring where depth requires it. This is a safety requirement, not an upsell.
- Proper bedding. New pipe is set on graded, compacted bedding material — not dropped onto native soil and backfilled. Bedding is what stops the next belly from forming.
- Correct fall, verified. Grade is set and checked along the run, not eyeballed.
- Backfill in lifts, compacted. Poor compaction is why a driveway sinks along the trench line two winters later.
- Inspection. We schedule the required jurisdiction inspections before the trench closes.
- Surface restoration of concrete, asphalt, pavers or landscaping, coordinated with you before work starts so you know what comes back and in what condition.
- Final camera pass with the recording provided.
What it takes
Two to five days for most residential runs, driven far more by hardscape than by pipe. Fifty feet of open lawn is a different job from fifty feet under a stamped concrete driveway and a mature ficus. Length, depth, soil conditions, shoring requirements and restoration scope all move the number, which is why we quote after seeing the line and the surface above it, not before.
Partial replacement plus lining
Frequently the best answer is a hybrid: excavate and replace the twelve-foot section that has lost grade, then line the remaining run from the repair to the house. You get the grade correction where it is genuinely needed and keep the rest of the property intact. We look for this option on every job where the defect is localized but grade-related — it is the cheapest correct answer more often than people expect.
Permits, inspections, and doing it once
Sewer replacement is permitted work throughout Southern California, and jurisdictions vary in what they require — right-of-way permits for work near the main, historic district review in places like Santa Barbara and Pasadena, specific compaction standards, traffic control on busier streets. We handle the permit for the jurisdiction the property is actually in and schedule the inspections that go with it. Unpermitted sewer work has a way of surfacing at the worst possible moment, which is usually during escrow.
