Spin Cast Lining for Pipes a Felt Liner Can't Reach

How spin casting works

A spin cast applicator is a small rotating head on a feed line, pulled through the pipe at a controlled rate while spraying lining material outward in a 360-degree pattern. Each pass lays down a measured thickness against the pipe wall. Multiple passes build up to the specified wall, and the material cures in place to form a new structural interior surface.

The difference from CIPP lining is what has to physically travel through the pipe. A CIPP liner is a tube — it has to be pushed or inverted along the run, and there are limits to the bends and fittings it can negotiate without wrinkling or bridging. A spin cast head is a compact tool on a flexible line. It goes where a camera goes.

Where this matters: cast iron under a slab

The classic Southern California case is a postwar house with a cast iron building drain running under the slab. Sixty or seventy years in, the interior has tuberculated — corrosion scale building inward until the effective diameter is a fraction of what it was, catching everything that passes. That drain does not run in a straight line. It has a closet bend at each toilet, a wye at each branch, changes of direction under the kitchen and laundry.

The conventional fix is to cut the slab, which means jackhammers inside the house, flooring destroyed, and a family living around an open trench in their floor for days. A felt liner often cannot make the turns. Spin casting can, which is why we reach for it on under-slab cast iron in Torrance, Garden Grove, Lakewood and every other postwar tract where the same drain was installed ten thousand times.

What spin casting is good for

• Cast iron building drains and under-slab lines with multiple bends and fittings
• Corroded and tuberculated pipe that still has structural wall remaining
• Smaller diameters where a liner tube would restrict flow too much
• Vertical stacks in apartment and condominium buildings
• Runs with diameter transitions along their length
• Situations where access is limited to a single small entry point

What it is not for

Spin casting builds a wall against an existing wall. It is not a substitute for pipe that is missing.

• Holes and missing wall sections. Sprayed material needs a surface to build on. It does not bridge a void.
• Structural failure. If the pipe has lost enough section that it can no longer support itself, the fix is replacement.
• Grade problems. Same limitation as every lining method — a coating cannot change where a pipe sits.

Where the camera shows those conditions, the recommendation moves to bursting or replacement.

Preparation determines the outcome

More than any other method, spin casting depends on what the applicator is spraying onto. Sprayed material bonds to the surface it meets. If that surface is corrosion scale, the new wall is bonded to scale, and scale is not attached to anything permanently.

So the descaling step is the job. Mechanical chain knockers and cutting heads run the line to take tuberculation back to sound metal, followed by hydro jetting to flush what was knocked loose, followed by a camera pass to confirm we are looking at bare pipe wall and not at a cleaner-looking layer of scale. Only then does the applicator go in.

Multifamily and commercial applications

Spin casting is often the only workable method in occupied buildings. An apartment building's vertical stacks and horizontal branch lines cannot be excavated without opening walls and floors in occupied units, and a full-building shutdown for a week is not something most property managers can arrange. Spin cast work can be phased stack by stack, riser by riser, with service restored between phases.

Timeline

Most residential spin cast jobs are completed same-day, with cure time between coats built into the schedule. Access is typically through an existing cleanout or a single small interior access point — still dramatically less invasive than cutting a slab. As with every method we use, the finished line gets a camera pass and you get the recording.
