Pipe Bursting — Full Replacement Through Two Small Pits
When a line is too far gone to line, bursting replaces it end to end without opening the ground between the pits.
How pipe bursting works
A cable or rod string is run through the existing sewer line from one access pit to the other. A conical bursting head is attached at the far end, with new pipe — almost always fused HDPE — trailing directly behind it. A hydraulic unit then pulls the head back through the old line. As it travels, the cone fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil and the new pipe is drawn into the space it opens.
The result is a continuous, fully fused, jointless line replacing the old one along the same path, installed without opening the ground between the two pits. The pits themselves are typically a few feet across, one near the building connection and one at or near the main.
When bursting is the right method
Bursting is what we recommend when the camera shows a line that cannot be lined:
- Collapsed or crushed sections. A liner needs an intact host pipe to cure against. Bursting does not.
- Severely deformed or collapsed Orangeburg. Most Orangeburg we find can be lined — see CIPP lining — but once bituminized fiber pipe has flattened badly or lost wall sections, bursting replaces it outright.
- Severe offsets and separations beyond what a liner can bridge.
- Badly deteriorated clay that has been root-cut so many times the remaining wall is unreliable.
- Undersized lines. Bursting is the only trenchless method that can increase capacity, commonly taking a 4″ lateral to 6″.
When bursting is not appropriate
Bursting displaces the fractured pipe outward into the surrounding soil, and that displacement has to go somewhere. We rule it out when:
- The line runs tight against a foundation or footing where soil displacement could transmit to the structure
- Other utilities share the trench corridor at close spacing — gas and water lines especially
- The line passes directly beneath a structure where the movement cannot be tolerated
- The route has to change, or the existing path is no longer usable
In those cases the recommendation is conventional replacement, and we will explain exactly which constraint drove the decision. We also call USA North 811 for utility marking before any bursting job, and we verify what the locate turned up against what the camera and locator show.
Why HDPE
The replacement pipe is high-density polyethylene, fused into a single continuous length before it is pulled. Fusion welding creates a joint that is as strong as the pipe body itself, which means the finished line has no mechanical connections along its run — nothing to separate under ground movement, and nothing for roots to enter. In parts of the region where soil movement is the primary failure mechanism rather than corrosion — the expansive clays around Temecula and El Cajon, the cut-and-fill hillside pads in Chino Hills — that continuity matters more than the material's chemical resistance.
What the job involves
- Camera, locate and utility marking. We confirm the route, the depth, and what else is in the ground near it.
- Pit excavation. Two pits, sized for the equipment and the depth of the line.
- Fusing the new pipe. HDPE lengths are heat-fused into one continuous run on site.
- The pull. The bursting head is drawn through, fracturing the old line and installing the new one behind it.
- Reconnection. New connections at the building and at the main, plus any reinstated branch connections.
- Backfill, compaction and restoration at the two pit locations.
- Camera verification of the finished line, with the recording provided to you.
Timeline and disruption
Most residential bursting jobs run one to two days — longer than lining, because the pits have to be excavated at the start and properly backfilled and compacted at the end. What you do not get is a trench along the length of your property, which is the entire distinction. On a hundred-foot run through a finished driveway and established landscaping, that difference is measured in weeks of restoration and tens of thousands of dollars, not in the pipe.
Permits and inspection
Sewer replacement is permitted work in essentially every Southern California jurisdiction, and requirements vary meaningfully between cities. We pull the permit for the jurisdiction the property actually sits in, schedule the inspections, and tell you in advance where a city adds requirements — historic district review, right-of-way permits, or specific backfill and compaction standards at the pit locations.
